YouTube Mashups not Working

by SCCC OIT

UPDATE: As of 8/12/2015, this issue has been resolved.

If you are using the Mashups tool to add YouTube videos, you might have noticed that it gives an error message when searching for a video. Likewise, any YouTube videos you might have added to your courses previously using the Mashup tool will also give an error message when attempting to play the video.

This is a known Blackboard issue that occurred when Google changed the way YouTube videos are searched for and embedded. Blackboard is working to fix Mashups but they haven’t provided an eta for it. In the meantime here’s two methods for you to add YouTube videos to your Blackboard course.

Link Directly to the Video

  1. Find the YouTube video you want through the YouTube website.
  2. Copy the link from the YouTube video
  3. Go into the Blackboard and into the Blackboard course you wish to add the YouTube link to.
  4. Select Web Link item from the Build Content drop down menu. Give your Web Link a Name and paste the YouTube link in the URL field. Optionally fill in a description to accompany your link and click on Submit when you’re done.
  5. Alternatively, within any Content Item, Announcement or Blank Page you can paste the link using the Insert/Edit Link icon to add it. Do this by typing any text you want to appear as the link or even pasting the link itself. Select the text and click on the Insert/Edit Link icon on the Text Editor menu. Paste the link in the Link Path field and click on the Insert button. Click on Submit once you’re done.

Embed the Video

  1. Find the YouTube video you want through the YouTube website.
  2. Click on the Share icon and click on the Embed tab
  3. Copy the embed code
  4. Go into the Blackboard and into the Blackboard course you wish to add the YouTube video to.
  5. Go into the content area you want to add the video and click Build Content and select Item.
  6. On the Add Item page, type a Name in the field
  7. In the Text area click on the HTML icon
  8. Paste the embed code into the text box that pops up and click on Update
  9. Click on Submit to post your video.
